Exhibition Catalogue

Catalogue Cover (Mercatorfonds)

„Charles the Bold (1433-1477)“ is an exhaustive reference book (hardcover, 382 pages) published by Mercatorfonds.

The English and German version are available from the Museum Shop.

The catalogue has five sections. The first section offers a survey of the historical and geographical situation of Burgundy with maps, biographies and a detailed family-tree. In section two of the catalogue four authors discuss aspects of the life of Charles the Bold. Werner Paravicini analyses Charles’ aims and achievements as head of state. Birgit Franke and Barbara Welzel describe his extravagant court. Katja Schmitz-von Ledebur focuses on the liturgical vestments of the Order of the Golden Fleece. And, fourthly, Till-Holger Borchert discusses the art of portraying Burgundian princes.
In the final section the reader is introduced to all the exhibits, arranged in thematic groups augmented by additional interesting artworks. Beautiful full-colour illustrations alternate with in-depth information about the objects and the context in which they were commissioned and used. A unique publication for the connoisseur!

The catalogue is available in Dutch and French from www.mercatorfonds.be.
